There is nothing as exhausting as snuggling up on your couch, scrolling for hours trying to find something to watch and ending up with nothing. Here are my recommendations from different platforms in no particular order.
Netflix South Africa
- MARKED: Marked is a South African thriller that explores the lives of ordinary South Africans and the challenges they face in trying to provide for their families. We follow the life of Babalwa (Lerato Mvelase), a devoted Christian who drives a cash truck and is very good at what she does. Babalwa is then forced to choose between abandoning all her morals and saving her sick daughter’s life.
- FATAL SEDUCTION: If you are a fan of Fifty Shades of Grey, you sure will love this. Fatal seduction is all about passion, betrayal and power. We follow the life of Nandi (Kgomotso Christopher), a school professor who falls in love with her student, Jacob (Ntuthuzelo Grootboom). I know you are probably thinking it’s a student trying to get ahead of his class, but this is not just another student-teacher affair, and things get messy when Jacob’s real identity is uncovered. Netflix has announced season 2 will be streaming on August 15th.
Showmax
- TRAP: The film follows the life of a seemingly normal father who lives in a quiet suburb. Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is his daughter’s hero and the kind of father who would do anything for his daughter, but underneath all that, Cooper harbours deep secrets and turns out to have a different life; it all unfolds when the police arrest him.
- STING: Sting is a horror film that follows a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne); she finds a spider and keeps it as a pet. Things turn messy when the spider becomes a deadly human-eating monster.
Disney+
- BONES: if you love crime and investigative crime, you’ll love this 2005 series that follows the life of a forensic anthropologist, Temperance (Emily Deschanel), who works with an FBI agent, Booth (David Boreanaz). The two embark on a series of adventures gathering evidence to solve murder cases.
