Looking Back Through James Morcan’s Mirror: Anno 2020 — image 1

Thinking back to the year 2020 is nothing but traumatising, and thinking of a movie shot within that period is a constant reminder of its cruelty. Anno 2020 redefines those moments and brings some perspective rooted in gratitude.

Set in the backdrop of numerous cities and continents, the film follows the lives of different individuals with different stories who are all trapped in pain and hopelessness.

The film is a hybrid of a fictional story and a documentary, covering some of the most controversial topics and issues we faced during the pandemic. Unlike most films shot during the period, the creative non-fiction by James Morcan is a rollercoaster of emotions and memories.

While some people may not see the significance of watching this award-winning film five years post the pandemic, James aimed for emotion and gratitude. The film is quite raw in terms of performance, making it more realistic and relatable.

Though there are minor flaws in the film, such as poor lighting, which makes the film – Anno 2020 – prove to be more than an adaptation of a book, it’s a low-budget experimental masterpiece that is sure to keep you in tears.
