After a season packed with raw emotion, awkward honesty, and the kind of drama you can’t script, Married at First Sight South Africa has officially wrapped — and let’s just say, the reunion delivered more than closure.

Now streaming on Showmax, Season 2 of the reality experiment proved why it’s one of the most talked-about shows in Mzansi. From debates around polygamy and religion to tense family moments and the realities of intimacy, the series reminded us that love — especially televised love — is never simple.

Four couples took the plunge into marriage as strangers: Palesa Mphaki and Tshepo Miya, Makoto Phumodi and Nkuleleko Mahlangu, Themba Khosa and Nelisa Ntabeni, and Portia Baloyi with Bongani Luvalo. Of them all, only Themba and Nelisa made it to the finish line as husband and wife, showing that while the cameras stop rolling, the lessons don’t.

Hosted by Relebogile Mabotja, the reunion episode had the emotional weight of a season finale mixed with the honesty of a confessional. But it was Portia who stole the spotlight — unfiltered, grounded, and ready to reclaim her narrative.

“It’s been a rollercoaster,” she admits. “You marry a stranger, then have to figure each other out in front of the whole country. It’s stretched me emotionally and spiritually, but I’ve grown so much.”

Watching herself on screen, Portia says, was both confronting and empowering.

“You cringe, you laugh, you reflect — but it also gives you perspective,” she shares. “I realised how I come across, and it’s been humbling.”

On her relationship with Bongani, Portia is candid but careful. “We’re still figuring things out. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve had some real conversations since filming ended. Right now, I’m focused on peace and growth.”

As for what’s next, she’s choosing a softer path: one of purpose, healing, and self-discovery.

“I’ve learned, I’ve grown, and I hold no bitterness. My truth is that I loved deeply, I tried, and now I’m choosing peace over pain.”

Married at First Sight South Africa Season 2 is now available to binge on Showmax — a social experiment that, beyond the chaos, offers an honest look at what it means to love under the gaze of an entire nation.
