Every good story has that central theme and idea, though frankly speaking when it comes to SouthAfrican films, they always have that similar element and their controlling idea is always the same. For
me they have lost that element of surprise and are all just so predictable. But not with youngings.
The new coming of age drama from the makers of Outlaws-It is safe to say that Tshedza pictures can
bring out the best out of even the dullest of stories. This is not any other coming of age story where a
good girl moves to college and turns bad. Staring Ayakha Ntunja (Thembi on MTV Shuga S3) stars
as Amo, the sweet and determined new girl who knows what she wants out of life, with
Kealeboga Masango (Zinhle on Rhythm City) as Buhle, an absolute firebrand and the “it” girl at
school.
In this high school drama, pear pressure is another driving factor in this story, the main
character, Amo is trying her level best to fit in to this new world where everything is new for
her, each day comes with it’s own surprises. The main question however is, how will she handle
every curve ball that comes? The creators made sure this was a nerve wrecking story that will
keep you at the edge of your seat. From falling for the wrong guy to making enemies from
teachers, isn’t that just soul crashing.
The film is clearly an Auteur film, with the director showing off his creativity skills in every
frame of the story. Additionally, Tshedza pictures sure does know how to capture the audience
attention by fully laying out the story line and central idea in the very first few minutes of the
story through imagery and that is story telling brilliance.
As always the creators have us hooked and asking for more, what can we expect in the next
episodes? That question can only be answered in the next episode of Youngins now streaming
on Showmax
