A line between good and evil is usually the hardest to cross, but “Marked” makes it thinner and even easier to cross. When looking at South African cinema, the first thing that usually pops up is crime and drugs—but you’d think, “That’s what makes Mzanzi.”

The new Netflix series is expected to land on our screens on 31 July 2025, and from what I’ve seen, it promises thrills, chills, and tonnes of action. Leading the story is Babalwa (Lerato Mvelase), a devoted mother and Christian caught in a high-stakes battle for survival. Babalwa finds that there’s a very thin line between justice and survival, forcing her to make tough and dangerous decisions to save the people she loves.

Marked is an emotionally charged narrative that delves deep into issues of moral conflict and sacrifice. The official trailer promises a tension-filled world of action exploring the dangers surrounding the lives of ordinary South Africans. The emotional rollercoaster has big names in the industry, and they are none other than Lerato Mvelase, Sphamandla Dhludhu, S’dumo Mtshali, Bonko Khoza, Natasha Thahane, Ama Qamata, Desmond Dube, Mduduzi Mabaso, Jabulani Mthembu, and Jerry Mofokeng. The series also features Gaisang Noge, Linda Sokhulu, and Clementine Mosimane—each bringing their brilliance and talent to a story that doesn’t hold back on twists and tension.

With the official release just around the corner, it has already become popular on social media pages, threatening to take the number 1 spot on Netflix.
